ROCK POOL ROAD SHOW

In September 2006 we were pleased to be able to launch our new education outreach programme, which was made possible thanks to help from Talisman Energy (UK) Limited.

The programme aims to give primary school children in the region a better understanding of our local marine life, through workshops with presentations, interactive games and ‘meet the animals' sessions. Among the creatures that will be visiting schools are starfish, hermit crabs, sea anemones, mussels, sea urchins and other hardy rock pool animals.
The curriculum-linked outreach programmes will be available for schools during the autumn and winter terms and will cover topics such as seashore life, classification of common marine invertebrates, fish biology and marine litter.

As schools find it harder to take day trips out and about, the outreach programme is a brilliant way for us to take the Aquarium to them! We're delighted that Talisman's support has enabled us to set up the programmes and we're hoping that lots of schools will book up for some fishy fun in the classroom in the coming months. Jan Rusin, Environment Manager for Talisman Energy has said: “It is important that we all do whatever we can to protect our natural environment. Macduff Marine Aquarium is an excellent educational centre, which gives children from across the North East the chance to see and learn about our marine life at close quarters."

TECHFEST 2006

Our new outreach programme, Life on the Sea Shore, was launched in September at Aberdeen's science festival, TechFest. Nearly 300 school children from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire took part in our workshops over the 5 days that we spent at the festival in Aberdeen's Beach Leisure Centre. All the kids got to meet bright starfish, shy hermit crabs, spiky urchins and

slimy whelks, as well as playing rock pool games. Everyone seemed to enjoy the workshops and it was a great way to showcase our new programmes. It was certainly a change of scenery for the starfish!
