Sea
Monster Fun at COAST and World Oceans'
Day
Following on
from last year's successful COAST festival
of visual arts, we took part again in
arty activities at the aquarium over
the course of the festival weekend in
May. This time we created a sea monster
which was to play a starring role in
our World Oceans' Day event on 7th June,
and we had monster fun in the process
(check www.coastfestival.org.uk)
World
Oceans' Day had a special theme of sea
monsters, myths and legends and all
the activities around the aquarium that
day were somehow linked with stories
from the sea. There were several highlights,
one of which was a performance from
the fantastic dancing sea monster that
had been created during the COAST arts
festival . The monster was named ‘Stinger’
and was paraded around the car park,
before performing a choreographed dance
with the local group Phoenix and the
Shimmies. It was great to see the monster
brought to life and leaving a trail
of glitter and sparkles in his wake!
Stinger can now be seen on display in
the roof space above the ray pool.
Still
on the sea monster theme, we had a guest
presenter here that day too. Jock Nicol
from Fugro Rov-Tech Ltd, told us of
a real sea monster that had existed
in pre-historic times and had been found
recently as a fossil in the Arctic .
It was so big and fierce it put the
T-Rex dinosaur to shame!! Jock also
told us all about his own experiences
hunting for real treasure on sunken
ships – a real adventurer!
Not
to miss out on the fun, our cheeky divers
dressed as mermaids in the tank for
the mermaid’s purse prize draw which
was a giggle, except that the cod thought
that diver Selina’s mermaid hair was
interesting food and she had to fight
them off!! It was a successful day and
we’re already looking forward to doing
it all again next year!!
