Estuaries form a transition zone between river environments and marine environments known as an ecotone.
These habitats are influenced by tides and waves from the sea, and also freshwater and sediment from the river.
The mixing of the salt and fresh water provides a high level of nutrients in the water column and sediments, making estuaries among the most productive natural habitats in the world!
