Rocky Shore Explorer

Do you love rock pooling but have trouble with identifying what you find?

Check out our new field guide to help you identify the common marine species you find in our local rock pools.

This guide was created with the kind support of the Friends of Macduff Marine Aquarium (FOMMA) as part of a wider project that was supported by NESFLAG and funded by Aberdeenshire Council’s Coastal Communities Challenge Fund. We use it for our guided Rockpool Rambles and outreach sessions.

Exploring the Shore Safely

Always check the weather and tides before heading out. It is best to rockpool with friends, on a low falling tide but be mindful of changing sea conditions. Ensure you have suitable footwear, are dressed for the weather and that someone knows where you are headed. Also check that you have a means of calling for help should you become stranded. In an emergency call 999.

Rocky Shore Zonation

The rocky shore is divided into zones deepening on the level of exposure. These zones can be seen below. As you explore the intertidal range you will notice that the numbers and diversity of species increased as you get closer to the sea. This is because these habitats are more stable and spend less time exposed to the air as the tide is coming an going.
