An important commercial species, the cod spends the first part of its life in sheltered kelp reefs, then moves off shore as it grows and shoals with others. The sensitive barbel under its chin allows the cod to find food in murky waters. Adult females release up to 9 million eggs each spring. Overfishing has put cod populations at risk.
