The plaice is a right-eyed flatfish with bright orange spots scattered over its back. Like all flatfish, it hatches from its egg looking like a regular fish, then flattens out as one eye moves over to one side of the body – the right side in this case. Flatfish only have colour on the upper surface and the underside is completely white.
